CEBU CARAVAN HOSTED BY UPLB GS

The Cebu Caravan, held on September 13 at UP Cebu, provided information to prospective students about the academic programs and scholarships offered by the UPLB Graduate School as well as its student services. The event sought to encourage potential graduate students to look into possibilities at UPLB.

The session began with a welcoming address from Dean Jomar F. Rabajante. He discussed UPLB’s commitment to research excellence and innovation. Dean Rabajante also offered an in-depth review of the Graduate School’s programs, emphasizing their importance in promoting national and global growth.

A presentation on the role of agricultural engineering in sustainability and how UPLB continues to influence the profession was given by Sir Ritchie Flores of the Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers (PSAE). Afterward, Dr. Pamela A. Custodio and Nhimvie Marie A. Doldolea presented the admissions process and discussed the requirements along with processes for applying to graduate programs at UPLB.

Dr. Ronillo Jose D. Flores and Justine B. Vergara talked about student services, highlighting the resources available for both academic and personal well-being, while Dr. Maria Kristiana G. Alinsunurin highlighted scholarship opportunities that make graduate school at UPLB more accessible. In addition,  Dr. Flores provided an interesting summary of Los Baños student life, showcasing the vibrant campus culture.89

The event concluded with an engaging Question and Answer session, allowing participants the opportunity to address their inquiries.  Dr. Pamela A. Custodio delivered the closing comments, encouraging guests to continue graduate studies at UPLB.

Marie Cris L. Supleto and Anabelle A. Ocampo hosted the event, while Jerry provided technological support to ensure the caravan ran smoothly.

Promoting UPLB’s graduate programs, scholarships, and student services to potential students was the aim of the UPLB Graduate School Cebu Caravan, which also served to assist them with the admissions process and inspire  them to seek higher education.

12th ASTHRDP Graduate Scholars’ Conference to Explore AI in Research

The 12th ASTHRDP Graduate Scholars’ Conference, themed “Artificial Intelligence: Embracing Change and Ethical Use in Research,” was held at Dusit Thani Mactan on September 12-13, 2024. This year’s event aims to foster discussions on the integration of AI in research methodologies while emphasizing ethical considerations. Scholars, researchers, and industry experts converged to share insights and collaborate on innovative solutions that harness the potential of AI in diverse fields.

PhD Applied Mathematics Graduate Colloquium

The Mathematics Division of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, together with the UPLB Graduate School, organized the PhD 

Applied Mathematics Graduate Colloquium inside the Mathematics Building on September 9, 2024. A vibrant community of scholars came together for the presentation of a few PhD candidates in applied mathematics, who told the audience about their coursework, research insights, internships, and academic trajectories.

Creating awareness and relevance of applied mathematics in solving real-life problems was the aim of the colloquium. Graduate students from MS and PhD programs, faculty members, and interested members of the public led to an enhanced quality of discussion regarding the shifting landscape of mathematical research.

The colloquium provided a platform for networking and collaboration, allowing students and faculty to discuss potential research partnerships and explore interdisciplinary approaches to complex problems. 

UPLB Graduate School Welcomes New Graduate Students

The University of the Philippines Los Baños Graduate School (UPLB-GS) kicked off in a new academic chapter as it welcomed its newest batch of graduate students through a hybrid orientation program held at the NCAS Auditorium and via Zoom on 12 August 2024. The event, which ran from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, aimed to familiarize incoming students with the academic landscape, services, and opportunities available to them as they embark on their postgraduate journey. The orientation was attended both in person and virtually, allowing a broader audience to participate and engage. The program was organized by the UPLB Graduate School staff and graced by key officials of the institution.

The program commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Pamela A. Custodio, UPLB Graduate School Secretary, who warmly greeted the new students and set the tone for the morning’s discussions. She highlighted the significance of graduate education in shaping future leaders and scholars and emphasized UPLB’s commitment to academic excellence and holistic development.

Dean Jomar F. Rabajante then took the stage, providing a comprehensive overview of the UPLB Graduate School’s structure, policies, and offerings. He outlined the diverse programs available and the support systems in place for student success. In his message, he encouraged students to make the most of their time at UPLB by building strong networks and collaborating with peers and mentors. “Graduate school is not just about academic achievement,” he noted, “but also about forming valuable connections and fostering a community that supports your growth as a professional and as an individual.”

Following Dean Rabajante’s presentation, Dr. Custodio returned to provide a detailed walkthrough of the essential processes and procedures for new graduate students. Topics covered included enrollment guidelines, course requirements, and navigating administrative tasks—a valuable session that aimed to ease the transition into graduate life.

A short break was held thereafter, where attendees were treated to light refreshments, offering an opportunity for the incoming students to mingle and start establishing rapport. The lively discussions and exchanges reflected the eagerness and excitement of the new scholars as they began to build their network in this new chapter of their academic careers.

The orientation resumed with a presentation by Dr. Maria Kristina G. Alinsunurin, who discussed the array of scholarships and financial aid options available to UPLB graduate students. Dr. Alinsunurin underscored the university’s commitment to supporting its students financially and academically, ensuring that they can focus on their research and academic goals without undue burden.

One of the highlights of the orientation was a lively talk by Dr. Ronilo Jose D. Flores, Associate Dean of the UPLB Graduate School, who shared his insider knowledge on what makes studying at UPLB—and Los Baños, more broadly—unique. His presentation, titled “Anong Meron sa Elbi?” explored various aspects of student life beyond academics, from the vibrant student organizations to cultural spots and local cuisine that Los Baños is known for. With humor and wit, Dr. Flores painted a vivid picture of campus life, leaving the new students not only informed but also more excited about their stay. He capped his presentation with an empowering statement: “Ano pang meron sa Elbi? Ikaw.” — a clever reminder that each student’s presence and engagement add to the rich tapestry of the UPLB community.

The orientation concluded with closing remarks from Dean Rabajante, who reiterated his welcome and encouragement for the students to actively engage in both academic and extracurricular pursuits. An open forum followed, where the students had the opportunity to raise questions and clarify their concerns. Topics ranged from research support and thesis writing to student organizations and housing options.

The UPLB Graduate School Visits the City of Smiles for UPLB-GS Caravan

Bacolod City, Negros Occidental – The UPLB Graduate School brought its academic programs and services closer to potential students with the Graduate School Caravan at Limman’s Center, Luzuriaga Street, Bacolod City on 08 August 2024. This successful event gave detailed information about what the UPLB Graduate School can offer, with an aim to encourage new students to pursue higher education.

A welcome message was delivered by Prof. Jomar F. Rabajante, UPLB Graduate School Dean, to usher in the opening of the event by underscoring the school’s commitment to nurturing leadership in research, innovation, and education. He also emphasized the value of networking and teamwork.

The participants were acquainted with the rich academic programs through some videos and an engaging speech by Dr. Ronilo Jose D. Flores, Associate Dean of UPLB Graduate School. His speech highlighted the high quality of education and opportunities that a student can get while studying at UPLB.

This pioneering event sought to provide prospective students with comprehensive insights into the array of graduate programs offered by UPLB, opportunities for scholarships, and an overview of the academic life and student services at the university.

The session commenced with an engaging presentation by the Associate Dean of UPLB Graduate School, Dr. Ronilo Jose D.
