Brief Description of the Major Field

The MS Genetics degree program is offered by the Genetics and Molecular Biology Division of the Institute of Biological Sciences together with other units in the University of the Philippines Los Banos, Laguna.  The program aims to furnish the students with a firm background in Biology with specialization in Genetics and prepare the students for competence in instruction, research and extension.

 

Prospective Students

An applicant for admission to the M.S. program must hold a B.S. Degree preferably in the biological sciences

 

Opportunities

Graduates of M.S. Genetics can be involved in teaching and research.  International Research Institution like IRRI, and multinational companies hire our M.S. Genetics graduates. Acceptance of our M.S. graduates for Ph D.  in universities outside the country like US and Europe is not a problem.

 

Requirements and Mechanics to Graduate

A minimum of 24 units of course work is required with at least 18 units of 200 level courses.  At least 15 units shall be in the major field and 9 units in the minor field. A thesis of 6 units is also required. To satisfy the minimum number of units required for the major field, the student may choose from the several genetics courses offered by the Institute of Biological Sciences and Institute of Chemistry of the College of Arts and Sciences, Crop Science Cluster and Animal Science and Dairy Cluster of the College of Agriculture.

After completing all the course requirements, with a weighted average of 2.0 or better, an M.S. candidate takes a general oral examination to be given by his/her guidance committee.  This will test the student's competence in integrating knowledge in the major and minor fields and shall be generally based on all courses prescribed for him/her.An M.S. candidate must also present and defend his/her thesis to the advisory committee.
